There's a reason lighting a candle feels like the beginning of something. The strike of the match, the first curl of fragrance, the soft light settling into the room – it's one of the simplest ways to mark a shift in your day. From doing to being. From rushing to resting.
But here's something we don't talk about enough: a candle, like most good things, rewards a little care. A few small habits are the difference between a candle that tunnels and flickers out early, and one that burns slowly, evenly and beautifully to the very last centimetre. Consider this your gentle guide.
The first burn sets the tone
The most important burn is the first one. Soy wax has a memory – wherever the wax melts on that first lighting is where it will melt every time after.
So when you light a new candle, give it time. Let the melted wax reach all the way to the edges of the vessel before you blow it out – usually two to three hours, depending on the size. If it's extinguished too soon, the candle will begin to "tunnel," burning a narrow well down the centre and leaving a ring of wax untouched around the sides.
Our suggestion? Save that first lighting for an afternoon or evening when you're actually home to enjoy it. Pour a cup of tea, put your phone in another room, and let the candle do what it does best – slowly.
Trim the wick, every time
If there's one habit to take from this guide, it's this: before every burn, trim your wick to about 5mm.
A long or mushroomed wick creates a larger flame than the candle needs – which means faster burning, flickering, smoke and soot around the rim of the vessel. A trimmed wick gives you a calm, steady flame and a cleaner, longer burn. A wick trimmer makes it effortless, but nail scissors work just as well. Simply snip away the blackened tip before you light.
If you have one of our wood wick candles, the same rule applies – gently break or trim away the charred edge so a fresh layer of wood is exposed. You'll be rewarded with that soft crackle that makes winter evenings feel like a fireplace in miniature.
Let it rest
Like most rituals, candle burning is better in moderation. Aim for no more than four hours at a time, then let the candle cool completely before relighting. Burning for longer can overheat the vessel and cause the wick to drift or drown.
Think of it as permission to be intentional – light your candle for the moments that matter, whether that's your morning uplift, dinner at the table or the last quiet hour before bed.
A few small kindnesses
A handful of extras that make a difference: keep your candle away from draughts, fans and open windows – a dancing flame burns unevenly. And always burn on a heat-safe surface, out of reach of little hands and curious pets.
Knowing when to say goodbye
When around one centimetre of wax remains, it's time to retire your candle. Burning below this point can overheat the base of the vessel – and honestly, the candle has given you everything it has.
One last thought
Caring for a candle isn't a chore – it's part of the ritual. The pause to trim the wick, the patience of the first burn, the moment you choose to light it at all. These small acts of attention are exactly what slow living looks like in practice.
So tonight, before you light up your candle – take the extra thirty seconds. Your candle (and your evening) will thank you for it.
