Brisbane winter has a particular rhythm to it. The windows stay shut a little longer, the heater hums away in the evening, and the house holds on to whatever you put into the air. It is also the season we light the most candles – which makes it a good time to answer a question I get asked often, usually in the DMs, usually late at night: what does "clean fragrance" actually mean?
You have probably seen the labels before. Phthalate free, paraben free, sulphate free, vegan, cruelty free – on us, and on plenty of other brands. It is fair to ask what sits behind them.
"Clean" is not a regulated word
There is no legal definition of clean fragrance in this industry, and no governing body deciding who may use the term. A brand can print it on a label and leave it there. So rather than ask you to take my word for it, I would rather tell you plainly.
What those labels actually mean
Phthalates are a group of compounds used to help a fragrance last longer and carry further. Parabens and formaldehyde are preservatives, used to extend shelf life. Sulphates are foaming and cleansing agents. Between them, they are the ingredient types that attract the most questions – and they are the ones we leave out.
Every Saide fragrance is free from phthalates, parabens, formaldehyde and sulphates, right across the range. Getting a beautiful scent throw without them takes better raw materials and a great deal more testing, but it was never a trade-off I was willing to make.
Formulated to IFRA standards
Every fragrance is also formulated to the International Fragrance Association's code of practice. IFRA is the industry's own safety standard, and it sets usage limits for individual ingredients based on how a product is actually used – so what is considered safe in a candle is not the same as what is considered safe on skin. It is not a marketing phrase. It is the framework we formulate within, every time.
Vegan and cruelty free
Vegan means no animal-derived ingredients, which matters more in fragrance than most people expect – traditional perfumery leaned heavily on animal materials, and beeswax still finds its way into plenty of candles. Ours contain neither. Cruelty free means no animal testing, at any stage, by us or by anyone we work with.
The part most brands do not explain
Our fragrances are made with high-quality natural extracts and nature identical compounds. That second phrase is worth understanding, because it is where a lot of clean claims get vague.
A nature identical compound is a molecule that already exists in nature, recreated in a lab so that it is chemically the same thing. Not an imitation of a smell – the same molecule, made a different way.
We use them for two reasons. Some of the most beautiful notes in perfumery come from materials that cannot be harvested at scale without a real environmental cost – sandalwood and oud among them, both of which sit at the heart of Dune and Kaia. And some natural extracts are more likely to irritate skin than their nature identical counterparts.
What goes into your home
The soy candle is one hundred percent soy wax, a wood wick and fragrance. That is the whole list. Soy burns slower and cleaner than paraffin and releases scent gently as it melts, and the wood wick gives you that soft crackle along with an even burn across the surface – up to sixty hours of it in the large amber.
The reed diffuser is fragrance and natural reeds in a glass bottle. No flame, no heat, no electricity. Rotate the reeds once or twice a week and it will keep going for up to six months.
The interior fragrance is parfum based rather than water based, which is why two sprays hold for around five hours instead of vanishing in ten.
It matters a little more right now, because everything is closed. In summer the air moves through the house. In July, whatever you burn, spray or diffuse stays with you.
And what goes onto your skin
The eau de parfum is that same fragrance at parfum strength, built from the same natural extracts and nature identical compounds, and formulated to IFRA's limits for skin rather than for a room. The same scent you burn in the lounge, worn instead.
The Glow body oil is five natural oils – jojoba, almond, avocado, argan and rosehip – rich in vitamins A, C, D and E. Warm a little between your palms after a shower while your skin is still damp, and it sinks in rather than sitting on top.
Made small, made here
Everything is hand poured here in our Brisbane studio, in small batches. That is a large part of why I can tell you exactly what is in it – no long supply chain between us and the bottle, and nothing sitting on a shelf for months before it reaches you.
That is the whole promise, really. Nothing hidden, and nothing that needs fine print to explain.
